Background of the Study

The choice of a career is one of the most significant decisions that students make during their academic journey, and it is often influenced by several factors, including personal interests, family expectations, societal norms, and the presence of role models. In the context of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, the influence of role models, particularly in the fields of healthcare and education, may have a profound impact on students' career decisions. Role models serve as sources of inspiration, guidance, and motivation, shaping students' aspirations and offering a concrete example of success in their chosen fields.

Role models in the academic and professional settings of nursing, medicine, and other health-related fields can positively affect students by encouraging them to pursue similar careers. Research has shown that role models have a direct influence on students' professional development, self-efficacy, and career satisfaction (Duffy et al., 2024). These individuals provide real-life examples of success and resilience, instilling confidence and offering practical advice for navigating the challenges of a particular career path.

In particular, nursing and healthcare students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University may be influenced by professors, senior colleagues, or even public figures in the healthcare sector. Their interactions with role models can shape their views on the value of service in healthcare, the rewards of helping others, and the challenges inherent in the profession. Understanding how role models impact students’ career choices is important for developing targeted mentorship and career guidance programs within the university.

This study seeks to investigate the influence of role models on students' career choices at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, with a focus on identifying which characteristics of role models are most impactful in shaping students’ career aspirations.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of role models in influencing students’ career decisions, the specific impact of role models on the career choices of students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, remains largely unexplored. While existing literature has demonstrated the influence of role models in shaping the careers of students in various academic fields, there is a gap in research concerning the role models in the context of healthcare, specifically in the nursing and medical disciplines in Nigeria.

Students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, particularly those in health-related programs, may have limited exposure to potential role models in their immediate academic environment or the broader professional field. The absence or presence of influential role models may significantly shape their career aspirations and choices, potentially influencing the future nursing workforce and other health professionals in the region. Therefore, understanding the factors that contribute to students' career choices and how role models influence those choices is vital for promoting career guidance programs that can better prepare students for their professional paths.
